Cook Islands ura & Polynesian dance — a judgement-free space to move, learn and feel at home in our culture.
A B O U T U S
We are a mother–daughter duo, Anau & Ku'ulei — founders of Soulful Island Dance. This group was founded back in 2016 — you may have seen us perform as Family Fun Mixed Hula at Mandurah Waitangi and other community events.
We are both Māori Cook Islanders from Mangaia and Rarotonga. We love sharing our culture with all people, and embracing other cultures whose dance is similar to ours.
Background does not matter — anyone who is willing, CAN.

There aren't many classes in Perth that teach the basics of this type of dance — mainly ura from the Cook Islands and a mix of other Polynesian styles.
We aim to create a positive environment for people who want to learn a little bit about their culture through Ura — and a welcoming environment for those who aren't of our culture but really want to learn.
Soulful Island Dance is also about connecting with soul and heart. Telling stories with our hands, hips and facial expressions. With beautiful songs from the pacific islands, most specifically from the Cook Islands.

Basic steps, hip fitness drills and isolations, dancing to slow songs with meaningful cultural lyrics.
Your own sarong/pareu you feel confident moving in, a towel and water bottle. You will sweat.
Respectful of others learning, good vibes only. This is a judgement-free zone for men & women alike.
Check our Instagram stories every Thursday & Friday — we run a poll to confirm numbers for the night.

By attending class, you acknowledge that photos and videos may be taken for promotional and social media purposes. If you prefer not to be recorded or posted, please let us know before class begins and avoid joining group photos 🤍
For our little ones: Children under 5 must have an adult present. Dedicated under-5 classes will be announced soon. Babies and young children who aren't dancing must be seated and not running onto the dance floor.
Men's classes are not currently running — they will be announced separately when they return.
Thank you for respecting the space, the culture, and each other ✨
